Ninja School Rules, by Kim Ann, is a 41-page-long children's picture book about Lucas and his new ninja school. Several other children his age also begin their first day in ninja class. But Lucas is especially nervous about, well, everything. He wants to succeed and be a great ninja like his father, but he's not certain he has the ability. Fortunately for him, Lucas has friends who help and support him during the lesson. Not every kid growing up has natural self-esteem, and some tend to be shy and afraid, for whatever reason. Stepping into a school such as this (a ninja school no less!) can be greatly stressful since it is likely way outside of their comfort zone.
However, the lessons in this book show the positive ways in which words, spoken by the instructors and his peers, support his moving forward, despite whatever doubts Lucas has about himself. Lucas goes from being his own worst enemy to taking those important steps of confidence. The artwork is colorful and does a good job in supporting the story, and focusing on the matter at hand—building his confidence. This story is the first in a planned series of books, given the pictures of other characters at the end. I can envision other books providing important lessons like this one. Ninja School Rules by Kim Ann demonstrates that even things that are considered difficult can be learned and mastered, no matter the level of one's personal self-esteem. Highly recommended.
