ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Helen Rogosin is an educator, writer, artist, and avid reader. As a recipient of the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in 2012, representing New York State in Science at the White House, she knows first-hand the importance of engaging children from an early age in reading, in conversations, dramatic play, and in hands-on learning. Born in Brooklyn, Mrs. Rogosin resides with her husband, two turtles (Speedy and Speedbump), and a rescued cat named Bubbles. From an early age, Helen and her older brother, Jack, entertained themselves with books and characters they made up together, including Wuffy, Bunn and Fly. Helen remains inspired by both her creative brother and by the inner strength of her older sister, Frymeta, who has Multiple Sclerosis. Experiencing the struggles of disabled persons through the struggles of siblings of children with special needsshe has taught, as well as her sister’s experiences have helped guide Helen to bring awareness to challenges faced by differently-abled people through her writing. Working in inner-city schools for her entire teaching career, she developed, funded, and incorporated an enrichment unit for students ages 5-8 that explored STEM concepts around the theme of Paleontology. Having acquired a grant to send her out west into the field on actual digs, Helen learned first-hand what paleontologists do and how they excavate and learn from fossil finds. She brought this knowledge back to the classroom in research and hands-on activity stations. Former students, many who have gone on to pursue science at the college level, say these paleontology activities have stayed with them as favorite memories as they explored, discovered and made connections in her classroom.( They still have the fossils they collected as treasured mementos). This book is a tribute to those experiences and the children who went on those adventures with her in her classroom.
